Choosing Faith Over Fear: A Path to Strength

Faith overcomes fear!

In light of recent global news, I believe I am faced with two choices. I can choose to allow fear to rule my thoughts and affect my choices. Alternatively, I can choose to plant my faith firmly in God’s Truth.

.If I choose fear, a formidable fiery dart, then I can be assured it will negatively affect my health. Additionally, my spiritual/mental state, and my emotional well-being, as well. That in turn will negatively affect my relationship with my family and my friends. Considering Satan’s intention to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10a), not only my life, but my witness would be impaired. So consider this. If Satan can pick us off one by one in this way, God’s army would be facing a demoralizing threat. right!

However, If I chose faith, then I have access to the mighty weapons of God mentioned in 2 Corinthians 10:4. With those weapons, I can counter every attack of the enemy. I can according to the second part of John 10:10, have an abundant life. Now, consider the powerful force of God’s army when we access such weapons!

God’s plans always succeed. We might not believe this if we lack the knowledge gleaned from the reading of Scripture. For that is where not only are God’s plans revealed but Satan’s as well. Is it any wonder then why Satan would distract us from spending time becoming informed about God’s weapons?

Yet, with the passage of time, our enemy has, with stealth and patience, deceived us into believing daily reading of God’s word isn’t all that necessary. The result is Christians have become malnourished and just plain ignorant of how to resist the enemy. Making us prime targets for, in this case, the fiery dart of fear.

Case in Point: Recently, by God’s leading, I’ve have discovered the following Truth thought in my battle with the fiery dart of fear.

Proverbs 2:6-12a

For the Lord gives wisdom;
from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He stores up success[a] for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity
so that He may guard the paths of justice
and protect the way of His loyal followers.
Then you will understand righteousness, justice,
and integrity—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your mind,
and knowledge will delight your heart.
11 Discretion will watch over you,
and understanding will guard you,
12 rescuing you from the way of evil—…

Notice verse 10. The result of conferring with God is that wisdom will enter our minds. That very wisdom will rescue us from the way of evil.

In addition, God directed me to the following:

Col 2:8, Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world (any godless idea raised up against the knowledge of God. based on 2 Corinthians 10:5)

But know this. To avail ourselves to these truths, we must go to the source of Truth. Then plant our faith firmly in what is revealed to us there. Then Faith will rule our thoughts, not fear!

The Quest for Happiness

Our Happiness Checklist

Ask anyone these days about what they want for themselves. The most likely response is that they want to be ‘happy.’ I wonder what they mean by that exactly? A constant state of blissful happiness? Of course not. Because we all know that something has gone terribly wrong with the world we live in. Therefore, a constant state of blissful happiness isn’t realistic. (Has it ever been?)

Yet, even though it is an unrealistic focus, (and from whom can we assume that thought originated) we persist in doggedly pursuing such a quest. Therefore, in light of our lack of achievability of this goal, maybe we had better examine where the course we are on will lead.

If our dream is to be happy, how do we feel when unhappiness invades our dream? Or how do we feel when happiness just appears now and then but not overall? Or what do we do when we realize we are unhappy? Do we quit the course that is resulting in our misery and choose another course all together? Many people do that you know. (That’s the end result of such a fiery dart.)

If happiness is the paramount goal in life, then we will find ourselves going to any extreme to achieve it. Even if we have to make those close to us unhappy. Now does that make any sense? How can we be truly happy if our choices have created such unhappiness in those we are close to? (The fiery dart, of course, is: It was the only alternative. The only choice that would ensure our happiness)

Therefore, before we set upon THIS quest for happiness, let’s figure out just what genuine happiness is. Let’s examine what makes us happy and then ask ourselves this question: “After I have gained all that I wanted that could make me happy, what will happen to those achievements after I’m gone from this earth?” An important question to ponder, right!

The Bible states this caution relating to this type of quest for happiness.

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Mark 8:36

So before we go searching in all the wrong places, let’s check a source that will put us on the right path: In Psalm 144 we read where King David prays to God for blessings which would make him and his people happy. He wraps up his prayer requests with verse 15. Here he acknowledges that yes these blessings would bring happiness. Nonetheless, authentic happiness (the true and lasting kind) would come from the One who bestowed these blessings.

I should remind us that this kind of happiness (also referred to as joy) will remain no matter if the blessings do not.

Making America Great Again!

make_america_great_large

This is a popular phrase heard in our country today.  Many people believe that since the presidential election, we have our first chance in years to actually accomplish this.

And that’s brings me to why I’m publishing this post!

If we believe that only a Trump administration can make America great again, then we will have succumbed to a dangerous fiery dart! Embracing an attitude such as this implies that we are placing the responsibility for restoring America’s greatness on the shoulder’s of an elected official. It implies that our job is done.

Okay, that’s the fiery dart we should reject,

so what’s the Truth thought with which we should replace it?

2 Chronicles 7:14

if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

If God is to save & heal our land, then He must hear from us! And who are the ‘us’ in this verse? Christians!

What must He hear from us? The humble prayers of confession and repentance.

THAT IS WHAT WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

God does care! Keep on praying!

Obviously, there are those in our country who simply don’t understand the purpose of prayer. From their public words they espouse the negative thought (fiery dart) which promotes the idea that God doesn’t care about what we are going through and isn’t about to fix the problems associated with the recent terrorists attacks.

They don’t realize that God, indeed, is going to fix this problem with evil once and for all when Jesus Christ returns (Matthew 24:44). But God has a timetable, and He has a plan, and we must trust Him to work things out in His way and in His time. In the meantime, we must trust Him and,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippines 4:6-7

Why?

Because apart from God, deep and lasting peace is unattainable. Because it’s at times such as these when we are falling apart that we need a strength outside ourselves to see us through. Praying opens us up to receive this strength which comes from God. For He knows suffering is going to affect us all and His plan is to provide a way to handle our suffering and come out on the other end of it stronger than when we entered it. Therefore, suffering, which is inevitable, can refine us if we choose to pray for God’s strength, or it can ruin our lives, sending us into despair and defeat.

We therefore must make a choice, and I recommend the following plan of action:

1.Recognize these negative thoughts for the fiery darts they are

2. Reject this thinking; don’t let it take root

3. Replace the fiery dart thought with a Truth thought. (The Bible is full of them)

For example:

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7, (gives us the strength to resist the temptation to fear).

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (shows us just how much God cares for us)

“…The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16 (confirms the power of prayer)

Christians at the polls; or not! Point No. 5

OR, No Vote; no voice!

OR, No Vote; no voice!

Point No. 5

I can’t get to the polls on election day.

The Fiery Dart of Excuse No. 5

I am confident that many Christians have legitimate reasons for not being able to vote or get to the polls.  These are particularly susceptible to the fiery dart that if you can’t get to the polls then it’s okay not to vote. If we do not possess the conviction that voting is a God-given responsibility, then we are prime targets for this fiery dart.

However,

If you do possess the conviction that voting is a God-given responsibility, then you will find a way to vote!  If you need someone to come pick you up so you can go vote, you will find someone who is willing to give you a ride.  If you are physically impaired, then you will find out how you can vote; perhaps by absentee ballot.  But remember, where there is conviction, there is action and you will find a way to express your voice.

And by the way fellow Christians, get out there and find those people who legitimately can’t get to the polls and offer your assistance. It’s the Christian thing to do! Remember, there are those with ulterior motives who will beat you to the punch if you don’t.

The window of opportunity to save this country for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren and future generations grows smaller every day.  But I firmly feel, if those 60 million eligible Christian voters would accept their God-given responsibility to vote, (and get registered, if they aren’t already) our beloved America could be saved! No more excuses, you hear me! Just Vote!
