Worry or Peace? You MUST choose!

Ok, here’s the scene. We have just poured out our hearts to God about a prayer concern. After we have exhausted every detail we can think of, we close said prayer. Then we move on through our day. Yet. ‘worry’ lingers!

Therefore, I offer this tip: Through the years, I have learned to address my prayer concerns using God’s own words from Scripture. After thoroughly addressing the needs of my prayer using God’s word, I have confidence in God carrying through with His word. It’s like, after walking away from my prayer session with God I turn around and say, “You got this God?” To which He always replies, “I just said I did!”

So, what do I do about the worry that on occasion subtly sneaks back into my mind? I return to the model God has given me about attaching His word to address my particular prayer needs. In this case the lingering worry over what I just prayed about. The conversation with God then goes something like this:

“You have told me you believe my words concerning the prayer request you just gave me. That’s good. But you are still worrying over it. So believe me when I say, Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Me. And my peace, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” taken from Philippines 4:-6-7

For you see while I believed God could do what the Scriptures said He could do about the petition I had presented to Him, worry indicated that I didn’t. So, I ask myself another question, “Are you going to believe Philippines 4:6-7? (Because, if I did, then peace would replace the lingering worry.)

I really wanted that, but it didn’t happen suddenly. I had to fire back with verses like Romans 8:28, Philippines 4:6-7 every time worry tried to infiltrate my thinking. You know, like in Ephesians 6:16. Thus over time and with consistent use, I continue to gain skill in wielding the force of these mighty weapons.

But remember, it’s a choice!

Who gets to rule?

1 Thessalonians 5:23 says the human soul is not only real but distinct from the body and the spirit: “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Here’s an explanation:

Our bodies were given to us by God to live in and experience life on earth. It is via our bodies that we see (a glorious sunset), feel (the warmth of a child in your arms), taste (a chocolate cake with chocolate icing), smell ( the aroma of burning oak on a cool autumn day), and hear (the voices of those we love).

But we all know that at some point in time our bodies will cease to exist, we will die. So then what happens to our soul and our spirit?

The body contains the soul and the spirit. The body is NOT eternal, yet the soul and spirit are. The soul’s eternal destination is determined by the choice we make while living on this earth to either accept Christ as our Savior or not. Heaven is our eternal home for those of us who choose Christ. Hell is the eternal home for those who reject Christ.

Our soul is made up of our mind, emotions, and free will. The driving motivator of our soul is self. So visualize a throne at the center of your life. Whoever sits there gets to rule. Therefore, a soul that is ruled by self gets to do what it wants to do. Pleasing self is the primary goal. It is adverse to anything that would dethrone self.

WHO GETS TO RULE?

And finally, there is our spirit. Our spirit is what distinguishes us as Christians. It is our spirit that responds to the invitation of Jesus Christ bringing our spirit to life. Therefore, it is by our spirits that we interact/communicate with God. It is God’s spirit that reveals to us truths from God’s word. And the more we delve into God’s word, the more we will hear and understand God’s voice.

Now back to my throne analogy. When our spirit is made alive by accepting Christ as our Savior, then guess who gets dethroned? Yep, self! Our spirit, that part of us who belongs to and desires to obey God, now sits on the throne of our lives. The primary goal has now changed. Pleasing God becomes the drive that motivates us.

An individual whose spirit is NOT made alive through belief in Christ, is easy takings for Satan. Since our soul is so self-centered we are easily manipulated to go after what we want, when we want it!

Without the influence of God’s spirit within us, Satan’s subtle tactics can proceed unhindered. As he influences the soul of someone who is not a believer in Christ, he is free to manipulate, deceive, distract us away from God, Jesus, Holy Spirit. (Three components just like us). That is his whole aim on earth. His plan is to take as many souls with him as he can to his eternal hell.

But, an individual whose spirit is made alive through belief in Christ, has the power to avoid being victimized by the enemy. Our spirits, when communicating with God constantly and growing in wisdom through the absorption of His truths, expose the tactics of the enemy.

The problem here is those of us (Christians that is) who do not spend time with God in prayer and delving into His word on a consistent basis, simply don’t develop the skills we need to recognize the enemy’s tactics. As a result, we become prime targets of Satans fiery darts.

When our spirit (that part that communicates with God and He with us) is positioned on the throne of our lives then God rules. And when God rules, then we discover the life that Satan wants to steal from us. (Now, maybe we can realize why Satan doesn’t want us to read our Bibles.)

So now we need to ask ourselves, Who’s ruling our lives?

Much of my post today was gleaned from the following website: https://www.crosswalk.com/faith/spiritual-life/what-is-the-difference-between-the-body-soul-and-spirit.html

Unchanging Truth or Shifting Shadows?

As a Christian, I know that truth to be True must be never changing.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17).

This begs the question: If truth can change, is it really true?

Do we really want to make choices based on a truth that changes? That is the persuasion of fiery dart thinking, of course. And isn’t that where we are today? Tragically, public opinion has become a determiner of truth. Public opinion supports the concept that truth is determined by feelings. Truth today rides around on a train of feelings. If our feelings change, then we change trains!

Think about the ramifications of living life based on public opinion or our feelings. Where will we find peace, security, hope, etc.? What will a generation raised on truths that shift with the shadows look like?

Public opinion or our feelings do not determine morality, or right or wrong. God does.

The expectations of Thanksgiving?

Hmm, Thanksgiving ’23 has been a challenge in spite of all the plethora of blessings God has showered upon me, especially lately. After returning home from a wonderfully long visit with my son and his family (who now live on another continent), the memories of the blessed surprises (one of my daughters and her two daughters showed up unexpectedly the week before I was to leave and then flew home with me) carried me for several days. Being back home in the quiet and peacefulness of my country residence kept the fiery darts at bay. But as life picked up its pace, and the problems of dealing with the harsh changes that had taken place in my life, prior to and while I was out of the country, gained reentry into my thoughts.

For the last few weeks, I have it seems, not had much success in resisting the downward pull of these heartbreaking losses I have endured over the past year. In spite of daily seeking guidance and strength within God’s word. The thoughts of my flesh battled constantly with the thoughts from God’s Holy Spirit. You see, I am keenly aware of the inner battle between the two. But I still felt I was loosing ground. If you have read my recent posts, in particular regarding the loss of five extremely significant loved ones in my life, then it will make sense as to why depression lingered menacingly at the door of my mind.

Now, it’s Thanksgiving Day, and I’m expected to feel thankful even in the face of such losses? How do I find my new normal without a best friend to share life with? Added to that sad fact is that my husband and I sit here alone. (admittedly just for today. One of our four children’s family will visit us on Saturday)!

All along, I have been persuaded that the impediment to my lack of victory regarding my present dilemma was, simply put, ‘me’! I was suffering from the “Oh, woe is me” malady. Or, it’s all about me perspective!

A few days ago, I was presented with these verses:

Psalm 27:13-14, I am certain that I will see the LORD’s goodness in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be courageous and let your heart be strong. Wait for the LORD.

That said to me, “Stop fighting this battle within your head on your own. Just wait for the goodness I will be sending you. In the meantime, allow Me to supply you with the courage and strength you need.

Therefore, I waited as I burrowed into my daily secluded existence. And now it is Thanksgiving Day! As I waited I have experienced God working out several irritations and disappointments, as well as working out problems that proved to be blessings for me. A few of those irritations have been simmering for years! Add that to the podcast I randomly chose to listen to early this morning entitled A Prayer of Thanksgiving, and the strength to lay aside the encumbering self consuming pattern of my thinking, began to take effect.

is the natural result of a heart focused on God no matter the context!

Moving through grief, but keeping to the course…

It’s been a few weeks now and while I’m still mourning the loss of my best friend, I do believe I have reached a turning point. The counsel of God, instructed me, early on, to take my time in grieving. And how long that time needed to be was up to me. So, I’m taking my time. Moving through as the light is given.

I spent time praying and seeking God’s counsel in His word. I’ve also leaned into writings of Christian writers that pointed me back to Christ. Such as C S Lewis and the website I referred to in an earlier post. I was prompted to cry out to God, like so many writers of Psalms did. For there was much I could not understand. I had questions, that had no answers. But I verbalized them to God, nevertheless. He was the only one who would allow me to unload without it threatening our relationship.

And that time spent in prayer and God’s word has and is bringing healing. The danger of dwelling on the unanswerable questions is that I wouldn’t move through the stages of grief in a healthy manner . I would get bogged down. For instance, “Grieving brings a deep sense of isolation. Isolation is a liar and tries to convince people they are alone and not understood.” Sounds like fiery darts doesn’t it!

But eventually, baby step by baby step, God is leading me out of my sorrowful darkness. While the pain may still be a dull ache that won’t go away, it is not as overwhelming as before. And while I may still have unanswered questions, I’m learning to not allow them to steal my focus. My moving forward will be impaired if I dwell on issues that are not in my realm to answer.

As I move into the Acceptance stage, I’m learning my reality has changed. “Acceptance has to do with concluding and moving on. We come to grips with the reality that there is no “going back to normal” rather, there is only a “new normal.”  My new normal is proving to be a learn-as-I go effort. I need God’s insight to navigate it successfully. Taking to heart God’s words from Scripture and applying them to my walk daily, gives me the light that will keep me on the path God has laid out for me.

And now, the departures…

A goodbye is just the beginning of a hello! Or so my 7 year old grandson says!

Now that Nammy Camp has faded into the sunset, what now?

The departures of each family group are accompanied by the waves, shouts of goodbyes and I love you’s by the remaining groups traditionally positioned on the front porch.

In past times, these farewell moments have been painted in gray. For letting go has been an all too familiar scene played out in my life. In spite of these colorless moments , there have been some revelations along the way which have served to paint these moments in a more colorful palette.

So how does this happen?

Referencing my last post, it’s an exercise in acceptance. Accepting that God is in control, and that His plans are always designed for our good.

Something else needs to be acknowledged here. My flesh, that part of me that always wants its own way, revolts when things don’t go the way I prefer. For I would prefer that all 4 of my children live nearby. Not in two other states, and another country!

Accepting God’s placement for my children and their families, can only be accomplished by preferring God’s will for their lives over my own will. This is no easy task, but through the years it has become doable. It takes time to grow in the knowledge of God’s truths. It takes a bolstering of trust to know that His ways are always better than mine. And as I exercise that trust, it grows stronger and more reliable.

Focusing on what I have and not what I don’t have, is another helpful exercise. This is where the fiery dart lessons come in real handy. It’s mighty tempting as I stand waving from my front porch to dwell on the sadness I feel as the final group departs. But it has been my realization that by overly focusing on the negative, I won’t notice the birds serenading me, feel the cool breezes brushing against my skin, or value the beauty of the quiet. For you see, I won’t be able to appreciate this different sort of quiet. A quiet that offers serenity, peacefulness, and consolation all at once.

I don’t want to miss out on the blessed gifts that accompany this season of my life because I am focusing on the negative. The reality is that time changes things. If I cooperate with God as He works His plan, I will discover the beauty, comfort, and purpose that He has prepared for me within those life changes.

I admit this is a God-size task. One that only can be managed successfully when I defer to God’s way of dealing with the departures that always follows Nammy Camp.

Guarding our Graduates…

Graduating from high school is a monumental experience. The whole idea of venturing into the unknown is akin to a StarTrek quest. Yet, our graduates are thrust into this unfamiliar environment whether they are ready for it or not.

When the world wasn’t so far removed from biblical morality, being thrust out into that world wasn’t as formidable as it is today. In the not so distant past a graduate would have time to adjust and come to terms with their faith as it applied to the requirement of standing on their own two feet.

Not so today! Today’s graduates, as soon as they take their first step into the real world, can be carried away with the flow of philosophies and ideals that run contrary to Truth.  That is unless they have become grounded in what is Truth prior to their graduation.

Due to their age, graduates can’t be expected to enter into a world with all the wisdom that experience usually teaches them. Therefore, it is imperative that they have at the ready a source to call upon to guide them through the uncertainties, confusion, and temptations of this world.

A mindset filtered by negativity is a byproduct of a mentality lacking the impact of godly truths. The negativity that clouds their minds blinds them to the good in their lives. Blessings, usually in abundance, are all but ignored due to this negative focus.

The wisdom of the Scriptures, enables graduates to be aware of the schemes of the evil one and how to thwart those schemes. From this source they will become wise and skilled to not only recognize the lies behind the temptations, reject the path those temptations lead to, but will supply the enabling power of God’s truth instead.

Therefore, prayers offered on their behalf, need to contain the following:

That they would not conform to the patterns of this world.

That the blinders of negativity would be removed.

That they would learn to listen to the Holy Spirit

That they would cooperate with God as He enables them to recognize the difference between Satan’s plans and God’s plans.

That they would feed daily on the strengthening power of the truths of Scripture.

How to prepare for the unexpected?

How on earth do we prepare for something we didn’t even know was going to happen??????

There is a way!

But first we must identify who is in charge of the unexpected: Who do we turn to when our plans are completely upended? When our health turns against us? When suddenly we loose something or someone dear to us? When an accident completely changes the course of our lives? When for some unknown reason others turn against us? When an opportunity we were counting on doesn’t pan out? When the unexpected happens?

When the unexpected occurs, we walk about in a stunned state of bewilderment, reeling from the shock of the unexpected event. Life is no longer the same. We weren’t prepared for this. We don’t know what to do. We do not have the capacity within ourselves to move forward. Those close to us look on, seemingly unable to reach us at our point of need.

As the days pass, we become highly vulnerable to Satan’s attack team of the fiery darts of fear, doubt, confusion, and despair. If we have no prior knowledge as to how to extinguish these fiery darts or debilitating thoughts, they will be fired at us with unrelenting vigor by our enemy. Designed to entrap us in a net of manipulation and deceit.

Now is the time to acknowledge who is in charge of the unexpected!

Hopefully,we have learned that preparing for the unexpected requires the wisdom of someone who sees the bigger picture. Someone who is not surprised by the unexpected. Someone whose understanding far surpasses our own.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6, HCSB

Prayers like the following will remind us of God’s plan and purpose for us during an unexpected ordeal. And with this perspective, Satan’s plans to destroy and weaken us will be thwarted.

Lord, Thank You that what is happening in my life right now did not take You by surprise. You understand the bigger picture of what is going on and I trust You with Your plan and purposes for my life. Thank You that You are in absolute control and You are fully able to conform me to the image of Christ through this ordeal as I surrender it to You. Show me what You want me to learn through this and help me to remain teachable and sensitive to Your Holy Spirit. I thank You that You are with me, that You will never leave me, and that You are drawing me closer to You through this situation so I can experience a more intimate relationship with You. May You receive glory for how I respond to all that Your loving hand has allowed in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Faith Must Grow!

Teach me to believe that all degrees of mercy arise from several degrees of prayer, that when faith is begun it is imperfect and must grow,… quote from The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions

Is our faith growing?

I think the answers to the above questions can be revealed by the following comparison.

When a baby is born it’s expected that growth and development will follow. Let’s say the child starts off healthy and with a nourishing milk diet the expected growth and development ensues. Wonderful, we are off to an encouraging beginning. Yet soon the child needs to transition from milk to solid foods. If the transition isn’t made and the child remains on a milk diet, then healthy growth will be arrested.

That’s exactly the analogy that is made in the following Bible verses:

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.Hebrews 5:12-14

Though, we have been born into God’s family, far too many of us are still on a spiritual milk diet.

Troubles happen and when they do, we find our milk diet insufficient to provide us with the strength and wisdom we need. So we default to whatever source is handy. At which point the enemy enters to begin his deception. As a result our ability to recognizes the enemy’s lies has been seriously compromised.

This is where seeds of deception take root. Our desire to spend time in prayer and God’s word slowly deteriorates. Not being familiar with God’s truth, we filter out thoughts, attitudes, and actions through false assumptions and human reasoning.

Daily spending time in God’s word and prayer is the same as eating a healthy diet for those who desire to be healthy spiritually. But our enemy has convinced us that isn’t required and we can get along just fine without that consistent discipline. Remaining in the milk stage of our growth for too long, we can easily be convinced of such lies (fiery darts, remember).

After we have lived a hit and miss life for so long, we can’t see that there is a better way to live life. Because our growth has been stunted, we are unaware of our desperate condition. We aren’t even aware that a better life exists. A growing faith equals a better life.

Filters and fiery darts

What do filters have to do with fiery darts? Well, recently it has come to my attention that there is a distinct relationship between the use of filters regarding fiery darts. How we process the thoughts that are formed in our minds before they take the form of the spoken word relies on what we use to filter those words. Likewise, how we process those spoken words relies on what we use to filter those words as we ponder how to receive them.

How we use our words or how we receive words depends on the filters through which they pass. As it applies to this post, a filter is what we use to recognize fiery darts so that we can reject them and replace them with truth thoughts.

Allow me to illustrate

Negative teasing when passed through the filter, ‘I don’t really mean that, I’m just teasing,’ justifies the tearing down of another. However, when using the filter of Scripture we are instructed to make sure that what comes out of our mouths should build up our listener/s in that particular situation. Therefore, our words should benefit those who are listening.

Let no corrupting talk (some translations use course jesting) come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29 ESV

Take another example.

I’m 73 years old and the other day a loved one said to me, “Janet, you are beginning to look your age.” Their filter allowed them to express the first thought that came to their mind in expressing their concern for the stress I was under. However, if they had been familiar with the following verse (filter) they would have reconsidered that initial thought. Seasoning it with graciousness. (“Did I look that bad!”)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:6 ESV

Ever heard of the word, hijacking

as it applies to conversations? Someone is talking and what they says sparks a memory. We can hardly wait for them to pause so we can interject our thought. Sometimes we don’t even wait for a pause, we just blurt it out. That’s hijacking a conversation. What’s happening here is we are not really listening to the other person. We are not thinking about what they are saying. Scripture has a very effective filter for this problem (that often we aren’t even aware we are guilty of it).

“With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves…” Philippians 2:3

Additionally, James 1:9a, ‘be quick to hear, slow to speak…‘ exhorts us to focus on what the speaker is saying and give them our full attention.

The Scriptures are designed to filter our words, thoughts, and actions. Just the ammunition needed to extinguish fiery darts!
