A Day of Remembering…

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 NIV

Vietnam War

We lost Larry in the Vietnam War. I remember so many details of that era. Introducing him to one of my best friends, Linda, to whom he eventually became engaged to right before he left for the war. And to whom it fell to me to deliver the heart-rendering news that ripped away the life they had planned together.

With every remembrance of that tragic day, I still feel my heart pounding painfully. Yet I knew it was the love Larry felt for his fiancee, his family, his friends, and the love of his country that empowered him to leave us. He was willing to lay down his life on the field of battle, sacrificing his tomorrows so that those he loved might live in freedom today.

Larry’s sacrificial death puts me in remembrance of the sacrificial death of our Savior. For it was Christ’s greater love for mankind that empowered Him to endure the horrible pain of the Cross. For by His death, and our choice we inherit the permanent home in heaven He has prepared for those who love Him.

Therefore, it is our responsibility to honor those who made that ultimate sacrifice by living lives that uphold the principles our country stands for. Likewise, it is our responsibility to live our lives in a manner that reflects the truths Christ died for.

May Memorial Day always be a day to honor those who gave their lives for our peace and for our freedom. And to be reminded of the One whose ultimate act of love secured our eternal home in heaven.
