In All circumstances?

How can we be thankful for the not so good circumstances?

   I have come to understand the answer to this question quite vividly as I was counseled by God during the writing of Fiery Darts.

   For too many years, my walk with God was characterized by more defeat than victory. Then, just a few years ago, I began to experience a gradual, yet powerful, transformation in my faith walk. As God continued to shed light on the darkness, which had plagued my walk with Him, I began to identify the source of my defeat. It became glaringly clear that negative thinking was at the core of my problematic walk with God. p. 14  FD 3rd edition

The Results?

   I learned to identify the great civil war (p.44 FD) that was going on within me. Eventually, I became more skilled in  distinguishing between the thoughts originating from my flesh, my natural bent, and those which were being whispered to me by God.      

     Finally, the attacks from my enemy, which were designed for my defeat, began to fall short of their mark. With every trial, I gained more strength, as long as I saw it from God’s perspective and rejected the fiery darts!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. James 1:2-3 NIV

The reason I can be thankful for the trials?

    Some trials I continue to wrestle with! But now instead of despair, I know joy. Instead of defeat, I know victory! It’s God’s battle plan for our trials. 

to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor. Isaiah 61:3, NIV

25 million didn’t stay home-this time!

I was wrong about the 12 million evangelicals who did not vote in the last election. It was 25 million.

BUT NOT THIS TIME!

And because we didn’t, we are on our way to seeing 2 Chronicles 7:14 being fulfilled. 

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

I can only imagine the fiery darts that kept Christians at home in the last presidential elections. Maybe something like:

-It doesn’t do any good to vote, we are outnumbered anyway!

-I don’t particular like either candidate!

   But things were different this time. For one, Rev. Franklin Graham visited the capitals of all 50 states and held prayer rallies for our country, emphasizing 2 Chronicles 7:14. Not only did he urge Christians to vote but to be involved any way they could, especially in praying for our country.  That hadn’t been done before!

   Pastors urged their congregations to get out and vote. And this was a hard sell because neither candidate was acceptable. So it came down to going to the polls and voting our values–not of the candidate but of the party.

   Christian leaders from all over the country emphasized the consequence of not voting. Christians bloggers, like myself, pointed out the responsibility we had as Christians to God and Country to vote. 

   And as Christians we have incredible evidence that prayer and obedience can determine the course of a nation. Especially one that has forsaken God and His ways. 

   Although, the media did not report on the 10,000 strong praise rally held in Time Square after the election, it was obvious that God had intervened for the sake of our nation.

   And as I observe the protests the media did report on, my heart was deeply troubled. So many have become victims of the fiery dart way of thinking that would victimize them and cause them to believe they must strike out at those who oppose their way of thinking. They have become convinced they must resort to violence to have their voice heard. 

   These protestors do have an enemy, but it’s not those people who believe differently than they do! No, it’s Satan himself attacking them with the fiery darts that promote hate, violence, and disunity!

   But the disheartening fact is that these people don’t acknowledge the existence of Satan or God for that matter. And we see on our tv’s the result of such thinking. Without the presence of God in someone’s life, it does no good to reason with them. They simply won’t get it!

   So Christians, be careful and thoughtful concerning our actions toward those who are so deeply disturbed over the outcome of this election. If we truly desire healing for our country we must be willing to continue humbling ourselves, confessing our sin, seeking God, and we must continue to pray-for ourselves and that the suffering of so many right now will serve to bring them the One who has very different and wonderful plans for their lives. 

To Vote or Not to Vote?

   Tomorrow many Christians will still be struggling about voting. Why? Because they cannot vote for either candidate with a clear conscience! For some of them, they feel their choice is not to vote! I believe that good, God-fearing individuals have become convinced that is their only option.

But I respectively ask them to consider this!

   There are only two possible candidates that have a chance to be elected. Therefore one of those two will win the election. That is reality!  No matter what your feelings are about either one.

Therefore, since this is reality, you are faced with a question!

Is there one more so than the other that you do NOT want to be your next president?

   If you choose not to vote, then by that choice you have increased the chances that the person you don’t want to be your next president will win the election. 

   Since the race is closer than was previously reported, I believe it will be Christians who will cast the deciding votes! Leaders like Dobson and Graham are urging Christians, especially, to vote.

   I hope those of you who are struggling about who to vote for or about voting at all, will consider the fact that you are struggling against a fiery dart that is designed to confuse, and to cloud your judgement, in order to keep you from voting!

Consider these Truth Thoughts*:

 Not voting is a form of voting, as it will influence the outcome. We need to take responsibility for our actions, as well as our lack of actions. I Peter 1:13

Voting publicly recognizes that we submit to the authority of the political system in our nation as established by God. Romans 13:1-7

Voting is a simple yet significant way we can do something about politics in our nation. ‘All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing, Edmund Burke. Psalms 34:14

God speaks!

In the last few days these (Truth)thoughts have been pressed into my thinking:

 

The trials in my life are developing perseverance.

(Came to me while I was watching someone lead a worship service)

Reminded me of James 1:2-3

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

There are a few battles that I have to let God fight for me! In the meantime, I must be still and know that God is God!

The LORD will fight for you while you keep still.

Which reminded me of Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

The Spanish Armada

   That is a word that rings too loudly and too often in many people’s heads. For some it rings for the sole purpose of influencing defeat, especially in a Christian’s life. It rings so loudly that it drowns out the Truth thoughts of God. Which is precisely it’s purpose. 

   Isn’t it odd that this happens to Christians! Christians have God on their side and He can defeat anyone or anything that is set against His will. But it happens!

Why?

   When we first become Christians we are like infants. And like infants, we must be consistently fed and nourished in order to grow and mature. However, many Christians today have experienced arrested development. This happens because we have not remained constant in feeding upon the Truths of God’s Word. And because we have not remained constant in prayerful communication with God, we have failed to develop in a healthy manner. 

   The unavoidable results of such neglect, produces such a weakened state that Christians  find themselves easily distracted by anything that is designed to keep them from these two disciplines. Eventually, we begin to live our lives not for Christ, but for ourselves. We turn our ears to listen to the World, instead of God. 

If this describes our state of existence as Christians, then Defeated will be the word that will define our existence.

   Do you feel defeated, confused, frustrated?   Please understand that these thoughts stem from your flesh, and Satan uses them to design fiery dart thinking, meant to undermine the wonderful plans God has for you. If these thoughts are ruling your thinking, then you have been cooperating with the enemy. Perhaps, you were unaware of this. But it doesn’t have to continue.

The following are Truth thoughts that will ensure the victory God has planned for us!

And you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32 ESV

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10 ESV

Listening with the intent to understand!

    I think guys, especially husbands, are convinced that it is impossible for them to understand their wives. (I know you know what I would call that!!!!) Therefore, husbands throw up their hands at the thought of trying to understand their wives, because the enemy has convinced them it’s impossible. 

     Ah, but God, has something quite different to say to husbands about understanding their wives in 1 Peter 3:7,

In a similar way, you husbands must live with your wives in an understanding manner, as with a most delicate partner. . . ISV

     I am quite sure that the reason this fiery dart has infiltrated the thinking of husbands is because our Enemy, Satan, knows full well the blessed effect this will have on the relationship between a husband and wife. So, he cuts them off from these blessings by lying to husbands and convincing them that understanding their wives is all but impossible. 

A personal testimony to the power of understanding

I can remember vividly a time when my son was about to leave to serve as a missionary in South America! We were driving around doing some shopping to prepare for his hiking of the AT and the night before he revealed to me his plan to go to South America.

I was overwhelmed! With great effort I had finally come to the point where I could release him to solo hike the AT and the night before, he had sprung this news on me! I remember privately crying out to God, “Really, God, couldn’t this news have waited a bit? I’m not at all sure I can do this!” 

As we drove around the next day, I labored under the burden of deep sadness, trying all the while to keep it from my son! Then my son said this, “Mom, I understand that this is going to be harder on you than anyone else.” Well, the floodgates opened and the tears flowed like a river. But they were not tears of heartbreak that my son was leaving me! No, indeed, they were tears of relief because he understood my pain. From those precious words of understanding, I drew the strength that would empower me to do this hard thing. It was all I needed to move forward.

     Now, I realize this isn’t a husband/wife scenario but it is a scenario that husbands can draw from to grasp the power of understanding your wife.

     Everyone, especially wives, have a deep desire to be understood by at least one person and the person of preference is their husbands. Their husband’s understanding is the source of their strength to deal with hard things. If they don’t feel they have their husband’s understanding they become all the more vulnerable to Satan’s fiery darts of self loathing, depression, taking personally all the negative things that you and others say about them, and wounding their hearts more deeply than you can imagine.

     Husbands, don’t allow the enemy to convince you that you can’t understand your wife. The Truth Thought is that God has mandated that you do. And when you commit to this, then God will show you how it’s done. Therefore, listen to your wife with the intent to understand, not to judge or criticize! The rest of verse 7 points out why understanding your wife is so important. 

Honor them as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing may interfere with your prayers.

After writing this post, I had a thought I want to share. It’s a good thing husband’s to praise your wives, but timing is everything. During a difficult or stressful moment an understanding word may be what’s required rather than praises! For your praises will ring hollow if they feel you lack understanding of their need during that moment. 

Christian, vote your values

 

Christians, when you walk into that voting booth consider the following.

“I will vote my Christian values”” Rodriguez said. “It’s life, the family ethos, it’s religious liberty, it’s limited government. That’s the person I’m going to vote for.”

   The fiery dart in all this is that when I step into the voting booth, I am voting for a particular candidate. FIERY DART ALERT folks! The truth is that when we go into the voting booth this year, we MUST vote our Christian values!

I don’t care for either candidate, so I just won’t vote!

   I could refuse to vote because I can’t endorse either candidate! But I recognize that fiery dart right off. Refusing to vote is a vote for Hillary!

And if I vote for Hillary, then I must  accept the responsibility that by my vote I have endorsed the following values: 

1) They want to repeal a law that disallows everyone’s tax dollars from directly paying for abortions. This means that Christians would be forced to fund the murder of babies.

2) They want to repeal a law that disallows foreign funding from directly paying for abortions. This means that not only do the Democrats want to increase abortions in America, they now want to spread it across the world.

3) They want to ban people from discouraging abortions. Basically, they want to make it illegal for Christians to try to help and persuade mothers to try to keep their babies. Praying Christians outside of abortion clinics would be punished for trying to help.

Nor, as a Christian, can I afford to overlook the following:

A Word from Mike Huckabee’s Facebook page concerning the effect voting for Hillary would have on future Supreme Court nominations:

   Now, some of Hillary Clinton’s potential SCOTUS nominees have been revealed, albeit in an unofficial way. This story notes their “diversity,” but it’s all on the surface. On their attitudes toward the law and the Constitution, it’s a list of lockstep activist liberals from the courts most infamous for legislating from the bench. We have two names from the notorious Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, several more from other top California courts, a couple from the DC courts, and two Democratic Congress members who aren’t even judges now, but both gave very partisan speeches at the Democratic Convention. Plus, not on this list but suggested in passing by Hillary Clinton, is the possibility of appointing Barack Obama to the Supreme Court to safeguard the Constitution. Which is sort of like appointing your cat to safeguard your canary. These would be the people who might spend decades on the Court, condemning our children and grandchildren to a far-left, Washington-controlled America unrecognizable to the Founders, one where the Second Amendment is history, and with it gone, the gutting of the First Amendment and the rest of the Bill of Rights can safely continue.
   The economy and terrorism are very important, but this may be the most urgent issue in the November election. I would urge the remaining “NeverTrump” holdouts to look over this list and think very hard before you pull the lever for Hillary or a third-party candidate who’ll help elevate her into the position of stacking the courts.

This was disturbing and down right scary! Remember, it’s about values not a person! And never forget 2 Chronicles 7:14. That is the final word!

 

 

 

 

The Fiery Darts of Politics

   I wrote a book, Fiery Darts: Satan’s Weapon of Choice, on which this blog is based, about how the enemy uses fiery darts (negative thinking) to steal, kill, and destroy the work of God in our lives. Perhaps you are thinking of voting for Hillary, even though you don’t like her or trust her, because you can’t imagine Trump capable of running our country. Perhaps you think that because of her political experience she would at least be more capable. Now, please understand that if you think like that, and I can understand why you would, you are allowing yourselves to be manipulated by the enemy. THIS IS A MAJOR FIERY DART! Here’s the Truth Thought that should replace that fiery dart: Don’t doubt God’s ability to make up for what Trump may lack.

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.

   By the way, do you see Hillary appointing a religious counsel to advise him? I have included in this post an article from Dr. James Dobson that I pray you will read! I urge you to keep the following in mind:

Dr. James Dobson on Trump’s Christian Faith

Only the Lord knows the condition of a person’s heart.  I can only tell you what I’ve heard.  First, Trump appears to be tender to things of the Spirit.  I also hear that Paula White has known Trump for years and that she personally led him to Christ.  Do I know that for sure?  No.  Do I know the details of that alleged conversion?  I can’t say that I do.  But there are many Christian leaders who are serving on a faith advisory committee for Trump in the future.  I am among them.  There are about 25 of us that include Jerry Falwell, Jr., Robert Jeffress, Jack Graham, Ben Carson, James Robison, Michele Bachmann, and many others whom you would probably know.  We’ve all agreed to serve. How will that play out if Trump becomes president?   I don’t know.  It is a good start, I would think.  

If anything, this man is a baby Christian who doesn’t have a clue about how believers think, talk and act.  All I can tell you is that we have only two choices, Hillary or Donald.  Hillary scares me to death.  And, if Christians stay home because he isn’t a better candidate, Hillary will run the world for perhaps eight years.  The very thought of that haunts my nights and days.  One thing is sure:  we need to be in prayer for our nation at this time of crisis.

Remain Quiet???!!!

Today’s post is going to be a bit personal.

   For quite sometime now, I’ve been threatened by an annoying dark cloud lurking on the periphery of my thoughts. For the most part, I’ve been able to avert its intrusion. I realize, because I wrote a book about it, that fiery darts are the culprit. Therefore, holding up my Shield of faith, sustains me. 

   But lately, while I’ve not lost my resolve to reject these fiery darts and to replace them with Truth thoughts, I’ve come too close to  the brink of despair and that bothers me. I’ve struggled to find the word that would label this battle, feeling that if I could know what I was fighting, I would be more savvy in choosing my weapons. And I did come up with the label, ‘bewildered!’ 

   Yes, that did help but not entirely. This negative storm, while never succeeding in hiding the Son, was wearing down my resistance. I pray unceasingly, read scriptures, and, yet, the  storm does not dissipate. 

   Today as I was reading from a book, In This Mountain, by Jan Karon (my favorite author), I came across an excerpt by Oswald Chambers:

At times God puts us through the discipline of darkness to teach us to heed Him. Song birds are taught to sing in the dark, and we are put into the shadow of God’s hand until we learn to hear Him. . . . Watch where God puts you into the darkness, and when you are there keep your mouth shut. Are you in the dark just now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? Then remain quiet. . . . When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message for someone else when you get into the light.

   I think it’s pretty clear what God is saying to me. “My child, you are consumed with pouring your heart out to me with your continual pleadings, but you don’t let Me get in a word in edgewise. Why don’t you come to Me, and remain quiet? I know what all is going on with you, you’ve certainly shared that with me in excess. Now, all that is left is for you to remain quiet and just listen.”

  Remain quiet?!

   I’ve never been good at listening quietly  following my prayers, so it’s going to take some practice on my part. Therefore, I will resist the temptation to reiterate my problem (I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have anything new to add) and practice being quiet.

   This is pretty bold of me to post this. I can hear the fiery darts now: What if God remains silent? What if you don’t succeed in being quiet? What if you miss what God is saying? What if you don’t understand what He is saying. What if you fail?

   While I expect to be pelted with fiery darts (Satan doesn’t give up ground easily), I will lift up my shield of faith as I stand on the following verses:

Ephesians 3:20, Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. (It depends on Him, not me)

Psalm 17:6, I call on You my God, for you will answer me; turn Your ear to me and hear my prayer. (God will answer me)
